Postcards from ‘Aunt Bee’ – sent during the 1919 Spanish Influenza Outbreak.
We welcome TDHS President, Ruth Sapsford, as our guest speaker.
Ruth will give us a special insight into life during the Spanish influenza outbreak by sharing postcards that were sent by Beatrice May Sapsford (1875-1948) to family members during this challenging time.
Known by the younger members of the Sapsford family as Aunt Bee, Beatrice and her family moved into their newly purchased house in Glen Rd, Toowong in 1884 when she was just a small child and continued to live here until her death.
Among the postcard are some sent from Sydney to her 3 year old nephew, Derek Pelham Sapsford detailing how the influenza outbreak was affecting her life.
