Toowong is an inner western suburb situated on the Brisbane River in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
The Toowong and District Historical Society Inc (TDHS) is an incorporated non-profit organisation that was established in 2003. Our aim is to foster interest in and research the history of Toowong and neighbouring suburbs of Milton and Auchenflower, parts of Bardon and also part of Mt Coot-tha. These suburbs were formerly administered by the former Shire of Toowong, which was created on 20 May 1880. This area later became the Town of Toowong in 1903.
TDHS is very active in collecting and publishing reminiscences of the area; erecting signage and placing plaques at places of historical interest; providing photograph displays, conducting history walks for school children; and has published several publications. In addition, the Society is dedicated to the collection of local history materials which can be made available, on request, to members and approved researchers.
TDHS is member of the Brisbane Living Heritage Network and is a member of History Queensland.
The TDHS has monthly meetings, usually with a guest speaker; organises outings from time to time to historical sites and has an active publications programme. We welcome interested people to attend our meetings and public lectures and to participate in our activities and research.
